Mr. Popper’s Penguins

We have been reading Mr. Popper’s Penguins and doing fun math and reading activities to go along with the book.  First we found out how much Mr. Popper earns painting houses.  Then we planned out meals for the Popper family to make sure they would have enough money for the winter while Mr. Popper wasn’t working.  On Wednesday we calculated the number of miles Admiral Drake traveled on his trip around the world.  Finally, when Mr. Popper received his “surprise” from Admiral Drake we began to research penguins to figure out what type of penguin Captain Cook is.  We came to the conclusion that in the book Captain Cook is an Adélie Penguin but in the movie Captain is a Gentoo Penguin.  On Friday, we graphed our findings.

We learned that most penguins live in Antarctica but a close second was New Zealand.  We were wondering if Mrs. Ericsson’s class has seen any penguins in their part of New Zealand.

We also found out that the Emperor Penguin is the largest type and the Little/Blue/Fairy Penguin is the smallest.
